Gym Rant: The 1/4 Rep

Here's something that really cracks me up: guys who load up the bar then proceed to do 1/4 reps.

It usually happens on the leg press.  A guy loads it up and does 1/4 reps (with his hands pushing his knees) while friends scream and cheer him on like he's just won the game-winning touchdown.

I've seen similar "feats of strength" done at the squat rack--these "squats" are better named "barely-bending-my-knees."

Here's what's really funny:  some of these goobers actually post their "lifts" on youtube--broadcasting 1/4 rep glory for all to see.  It's kind of like pro wrestling: 12 year old boys are impressed, but the rest of us just don't get it.

To all 1/4 rep guys:  you know who you are.  Stop it.  Seriously.

So, I'm not really sure what those 1/4 reps are, but I've seen what you are talking about. Guys loading up the bars and looking like they are doing something, but you can tell they really aren't doing as much as it looks. And I've seen others who are absolutely amazing...makes me stop what I'm doing and just watch (oh, I'm a girl, so it's kinda fun too.) And when I'm with my trainer, I'm always asking him if something someone is doing is good. He often says their form is bad and they could get hurt. But then there are those others who look amazing...good form...ummm, yeah, oh, already said all that....

Yep, that's it! By 1/4 I mean they only go about a fourth of the depth they actually should go for a legit repetition.
