Does Eating Before Sleep Make You Fat?

We've all heard that eating after a certain time in the evening will make you fatter.  Is this true or it is a fitness myth?

We know, for example, that Sumo wrestlers eat big meals before they sleep.  But there are other factors influencing their huge girth (the massive caloric intake, etc).

Weight loss or weight gain is ultimately determined by overall calorie balance, regardless of what time you eat.  As far as I know,  there's nothing (metabolically) about sleep itself that causes you to store more fat.

The primary danger of late-night eating seems to be related to overall caloric excess.  In other words, it's our tendency to sit around eating ice cream in front of the TV.

So, it's ok eat before sleep as logn as it isn't rice, bread (carbs), what about fruits, like banana and apple?

1 cup mashed banana has like 200 calories. It has a lot of potassium though that I badly need, specially during summer, I get lots of cramps when the climate is hot no matter how I drink. Bad thing is, banana is high in sugar.

what would you suggest?

I eat bananas, too. Just try to eat them more during the day and not right before you go to bed.

Well, I asked about the banana kasi I eat 4-5 pm and sometimes I get really hungry at 9-10 pm so I eat banana but not always. Just 1 lang naman.

is there an alternative but not meat?

Meat, eggs, fish, or green fibrous vegetables (broccoli, etc).

I work out pretty intensely and without fail, eat a bowl of breakfast cereal before going to bed, though not the sugary variety. Often I'll add some whey powder on top. It's a lot of carbs, but I have a pretty energetic metabolism. I can see, however, the wisdom of avoiding a lot of carbs before sleep.

Well, that's fine if it is working for you. I'm speaking mainly for those trying to get leaner.
